Art Appreciation through Drawing 

Through a series of drawing exercises students learn that art is an attitude for self-expression using various media including, sculpture, dance, music, even plumbing! Art can be used to teach self respect and build confidence. Jerri Johnson is an Inner City Angels' artist and professor in visual art at George Brown College.

Curriculum Based Learning through Visual Art

Author / illustrator Karen Patkau takes participants through the process and the purpose of picture book illustration – from initial concept to finished artwork. Students can reinforce their learning and create illustrated works in different subject areas. In addition to fulfilling expectations of the Arts Curriculum, projects can be linked to the Language, Social Studies, Science or Math Curriculum, or be based on folklore or personal experience from student's culture of origin.

Go Figure Paper Sculpture

Artist Paul Walty uses drawing to explore real, three-dimensional space, not the simulated kind based on perspective, shading, etc. Participants use pencils, eraser, markers and paper to orient point of departure on this exciting and very rewarding introduction to sculpture. If you can handle a pair of scissors this workshop is for you. No drawing skill or glue stick required!

Primaries

Collage Self Portraits (K to 4)

Create your self-portrait in an exploration of your culture, time and identity. Artist Amelia Jimenez offers a simple yet stunning project that uses colourful recycled materials, and materials that are easily accessible in the classroom to create your own portrait, a friend’s portrait, or an imaginary one, using the cut and paste collage technique. Bring a magazine!

Musée Global MuseumTrademark (primary grades)

Global Museum is a unique learning environment where a collection of global arts traditions (e.g. kites, shadow puppets, textiles, legends, folktales) serves as the basis for an art activity such as shadow puppetry. Curriculum Links: Global Art & Culture • Social Studies • Geography • History • Oral Tradition/Language • Science including light/shadow & sound waves. Global Museum curator is Sandra Phillips.

Juniors

Land, Sea & Cityscapes (4 to 6)

Real or fantasy mixed media portraits, land, sea and cityscapes are laminated on a plastic sheet with colourfast tissue papers creating multi coloured transparencies. Opaque colour construction papers torn into shapes complete the work. When dry a clear coat of acrylic medium is applied. Peel off the plastic and your finished art is ready to be hung or framed. Simple and fun and ideal for cross curriculum connections! Offered by sculpture artist Ken Kettlewell.

Paint Our Land (junior grades)

Canadian history is tied to its geography and The Group of Seven paintings are Canada’s expression of this relationship. Paint Our Land builds understanding and abilities in painting and art history. Participants explore the topics and techniques of these masters with artists Elizabeth Greisman and Karen Harkins.
